Understanding surf forecasts: how to read a surf report before hitting the water

A surf forecast is only useful if you know how to read one. The numbers and symbols on forecast platforms like Surf-Forecast, Magic Seaweed or Windguru contain more information than most surfers actually extract from them, and misreading a report is one of the most common reasons people show up at the wrong spot at the wrong time. Understanding what each data point means and how they interact takes the guesswork out of session planning.

Swell height: what the numbers actually mean

Swell height on a forecast is typically reported as significant wave height, a statistical measure representing the average of the highest third of waves in a given period. It does not mean every wave will be that size. In practice, the largest waves in a set will exceed the reported height, while many waves between sets will be smaller.

Different forecasting platforms also use different measurement conventions. Some report open-ocean swell height, which will be larger than what actually breaks at a beach because energy is lost as swells travel into shallow water and refract around headlands. Others report face height or breaking wave height, which is more directly useful for planning. Knowing which convention your preferred platform uses prevents consistent overestimation of conditions.

Swell period and direction

A 1.5-metre swell at 7 seconds will be choppy and weak at most breaks. A 1.5-metre swell at 14 seconds will produce powerful, well-defined waves. Swell direction is reported in degrees or cardinal direction and indicates where the swell is coming from, not where it is going. A swell from 280 degrees is coming from slightly north of due west. Whether that direction produces good waves at a specific spot depends entirely on that spot’s orientation and exposure. A beach facing due west will receive it head-on. A beach facing southwest will receive it at an angle, which may or may not improve conditions depending on the bottom topography.

Wind data: speed, direction and timing

Forecast platforms display wind speed in knots or kilometres per hour and direction using the same compass convention as swell. Cross-referencing wind direction with your break’s orientation is the critical step. A wind that reads as offshore for one beach may be onshore for a beach two kilometres away facing a different direction.

Wind forecasts are less reliable at 72 hours or beyond, particularly for localised coastal conditions where sea breeze effects, cliff deflection and headland shelter can significantly alter what the open-ocean model predicts. For sessions more than two days out, treat the wind forecast as indicative rather than definitive and recheck the day before.

Morning sessions typically benefit from lighter winds before the sea breeze develops. In Ireland, sea breeze patterns vary considerably by season and coastline orientation, but as a general rule, early mornings before 9am tend to produce cleaner surface conditions than afternoons on days with significant thermal activity.

Reading the forecast timeline

Forecast platforms display data in three-hour intervals or hourly breakdowns. Reading the full timeline for a day, rather than just a snapshot, reveals whether conditions are building or fading and whether there is a window of better quality within an otherwise average day.

A swell that is dropping in height but whose period is lengthening may actually improve over the course of the morning as the disorganised short-period energy dissipates and the cleaner longer-period swell dominates. A session planned for the peak of the swell may be more crowded and more chaotic than one planned for the tail end of the same system.

Combining forecast data with local knowledge

No forecast replaces firsthand observation, but a well-read forecast significantly narrows your decision-making. The most effective approach is to use forecast data to shortlist spots and windows, then confirm conditions with a webcam check or a local contact if available, and adjust on arrival based on direct observation.

Irish coastal conditions are particularly subject to rapid change due to the Atlantic exposure and the frequency of passing frontal systems. A forecast that looked promising two days out can shift significantly by the morning of a session. Building the habit of checking updated forecasts within 12 hours of paddling out, rather than relying on longer-range planning, produces more consistent results.
